Our series of centenary celebrations concluded with an overnight visit from Guardian journalist and natural history writer Patrick Barkham. I had just read his book, The Butterfly Isles, so was particularly interested to meet him. Having fed numerous visitors over the summer, it was requested that Patrick cook for us in exchange for overnight accommodation. He was dropped off by boat on a rainy evening, sleeping bag in tow, along with ingredients for a vegetarian curry. Being a naturalist, Patrick asked us informed, detailed and probing questions. The theme of his article was to be ‘Do we still need nature reserves?’

In his article, Patrick wasn’t shy to mention the challenges of dog walkers and the need for pest control. He even mentioned our April helicopter visit from Jay Kay. Although Steve Downes had been told the story, it was requested that he did not publish it. Time having passed, it was mentioned quite offhandedly to Patrick. Inevitably, news reached Steve that the story was out and so he wrote an article about it in the EDP, despite it having happened five months before. The article probably attracted more interest than his whole ‘Point Break’ feature and was also picked up by the Daily Mirror and the Daily Star. We put our version of events on the blog, emphasising our key wildlife messages.
